Monkey Shoulder Scotch is a premium mixed malt whiskey from Willian Grant, blended with single malts derived from three established Speyside Distilleries. This leads to a fine, distinct and balanced Scotch which pairs wonderfully over ice or whisky cocktail mixes.
Monkey Shoulder is also branded as “Batch 27” which refers to the initial experimental 27-cask run. Currently, Monkey shoulder batches are also made at 27/time and the batches are not numbered separately. The monitoring (vatting) is a mixture of three separate Willian Grant & Sons distilleries found in Dufftown, Speyside: The Kininvie, the Balvenie and of course, the Glenfiddich. All three come from initial ex-bourbon casks. In some cases, malts from other “secret” distilleries might be featured in the process. The age of the whiskeys is not published but you may guess if they are young or not.
The interesting part is “Monkey Shoulder” took its name from a chronic injury suffered by malt producers following several hours turning malt to the malting ground.
